Volatile markets manufacture urgency. Headlines demand a reaction; screens reward the appearance of activity. For a long-term owner, that urgency is usually a tax to be avoided, not a signal to be obeyed.

Reacting is expensive

Selling quality into fear locks in losses and forfeits the recovery. Trading around every headline compounds cost and error. In a concentrated portfolio of businesses we understand, the correct response to noise is almost always patience — holding what we own and letting the underlying value keep working.

Time in strong businesses beats timing around weak headlines. It is not close.

When we do act

Restraint is not passivity. When volatility hands us a genuinely attractive price on a business we already admire, we act decisively — adding on weakness rather than chasing strength. Through the summer, that meant a handful of deliberate additions and, otherwise, the discipline to leave a good portfolio alone.

The market pays for patience. Our job is simply to have enough of it.
